How To Kiss advises caution with someone new or someone you know little about, because it is easy to think that someone is fine when you know little about them - and they may really be useless or even dangerous. But do not let that put you off getting to know new people completely, just be careful.

If you want to get to know someone or are looking for someone to date, then there are lots of places that you might meet people - where you study or work, around where you live, where you spend your leisure time or even on the internet or through dating agencies. If you are stuck to find that real soulmate then it is a good idea to follow an interest - if you are interested in yoga, chess or sealife then sign-up to a yoga, chess or sealife class or club !! Having an active interest or hobby also makes you more interesting and gives you something different to talk about.

And it will go best if you first get clear on why really you want a new friend. So is it ;

1. to have friendly company and friendly fun. (better than hanging out with a silly gang ?)
2. to have regular sex fun. (but some double-date to get more, especially the married ?)
3. to have children. (especially if middle-age approaching ?)
4. for money. (if honest as a paid escort, if dishonest as a thief ?)
5. for love. (the ideal ?)

Now you may start with having one of these reasons only, and that may change when you get to know a new friend better. But you will do best to show yourself right for what you want - if you only want friendly company then do not say you mostly like sex because that will only attract those who mainly want that.

If you are looking to get to know someone then it will help if you can try to improve your dress a bit, new shoes or a new hair style or whatever.

When it does come to an actual new person that you want to make friends with, if you are a bit unsure about how to get to know them, they may also be unsure. Just get friendly, without thinking about dating, first with a simple smile and a simple word like 'Hi'. Go slowly, and in all cases try to find out a little about a person before considering befriending or dating them.
Try to find out if they do any stuff that may make them a bad friend or a bad date - do they fight, drink, lie, steal or hang with a gang ? Of course if they lie then they will probably say that they are none of these when they are ! When you find someone who is not a louse and may be worth you dating, then try to find out and learn about at least one of their interests - be it a sport, a band, a TV show or whatever. It can certainly help you if you feel stuck with how to date someone.

To ask your intended date for a first date, or to encourage them to ask you, get friendly slowly. Say 'Hi', smile, say 'Damn I'm late', say 'God I'm freezing', say 'My football team is doing crap'. Just get friendly without thinking about your dating ideas. If slowly some talking gets going, then they will ask you for a date or you will begin to feel easier about asking them for a date. But start just by getting friendly and NOT thinking about dating. Mention any interests or hobbies you have and any of your good points - eg I am a good cook or a good listener. But do not greatly over-sell yourself by lying that you are richer than you are or by promising a 'Rose Garden' life. And do not touch before a date unless they first touch you, in which case you might briefly touch their back or elbow only.

So now you know someone a bit that you would like to date, but how do you date someone for the first time ? If they have not asked you for a date then you must ask them. It may often be best to start small, with a 'Want to catch a coffee or coke ?' - or bigger with a 'There's a great film or show on Friday, like to go ?'. If you keep it specific, and avoid 'Would you like to date ?' then you are more likely to get a yes or to leave open a second chance.
